Scandinavian Micro Biodevices (SMB) was established in year 2000 as a technology company with a core competence in design and production of micro-fluidic cartridges by the Danish NKT group. The business model was to both develop own products and offer our development and production capabilities on an OEM basis to other companies.

Technology wise the company acquired several patents covering more than 12 years consecutive research from both the Danish Technical University and NKT's internal R&D group in its startup phase. In 2002 the company was sold to the American corporation Alere Inc. In the first years after the sale to Alere, SMB successfully participated in a number of internal development project with sister companies around the world and in January 2005 SMB was tasked with developing the world’s smallest PT measuring system.

Twelve months later SMB successfully transferred an instrument the size of a small cellphone and a cartridge using only 1,6 microliters of blood aimed at managing anticoagulant PT therapy to our Scottish sister company Sterling Medical.
